State String Art

So I'm slightly obsessed with this craft. It's easy, cheap, and personal. You can do one state or one for each you've lived in. It also makes for a great present.

SO start off with any size wood piece. I got an 9x12 piece for super cheap at a hardware store. I also have done this with pre-made wood plaques at Michaels for about 3 bucks. The thickness is up to you as long as you can hit nails into it without them coming out the other side.

Then I paint them (about three coats) enough so you can't see the wood grain anymore. After it's all dry I google the state I want to make and print out the image like this...

I then cut out the State and place it on the painted piece of wood.

If you want you can use a piece of scotch tape to keep it down.

Then it's time to nail away! I place to nails about half an inch from each other all the way around the state. Careful, your hands will get very dirty from the nails.
To add a little something extra I put a heart where I live and nails it in to the wood through the paper.

After you're all done, pull the paper away. Some pieces will stick to the nails so i just took tweezers to pull them out.

Then you will tie your string at one of the corners and start lacing them in no order side to side.

After its looking how you want tie the string off on another corner and viola! I like painting my nail heads a different color to make it more colorful. I also added a heart to the heart opening but that's not necessary. Finished product...
